On May 17, 2009 Star Quarry Farm’s two-year old filly, Santeria SQF, left Newberry Florida for her
eleven hundred mile journey to New York. Richard Jankura, owner and trainer of Berry Hill Farm in
Oyster Bay Cove, New York has purchased Santeria (AKA - Ria), as one of his new prospects.
Rick has been on sort of a hiatus from the equine scene while he was following other related interests
for the past few years. During this quiet time, he enjoyed the pleasures of his two Hanoverians at his
home. Although Rick has been an active equestrian since the age of five, his broader interests of art,
architecture and horticulture are equally as demanding on his time. For the past few years, Rick has
been constructing a small farm facility on the north shore of Long Island in New York. The property
encompasses a small barn & stable, a riding arena, and an environmentally sensitive landscape
architecture complete with a riding course. He is currently finishing a very special residence that is
meant to be a model of sustainable living.
The architecture is an comprehensive mix of origins and time, blended into the new American
vernacular. Rick traveled far and wide bringing together artisans and craftsman to build an energy
efficient structure in keeping with today’s realities of diminishing fossil fuels and expanding carbon
footprints. It is timeless in its appearance yet contemporary in its functionality. The house makes bold
statements pertaining to reigning in excessive space in an effort to create a home that is a more
conscious host of communication between its family members. It is a building that incorporates a
passive solar design, geothermal heating & cooling, daylight harvesting, and a variety of other materials
and technologies to make it a low impact yet environmentally healthy house.
Rick, who began his mounted days as a tyke, slaloming through barrels, in a western saddle, eventually
traded in his chaps for britches and his lariat for a dressage whip. In his early twenties he grew
enamored with the challenges of three-day eventing, which caused him to upgrade his rides from
quarter horses to warmbloods. Soon after crossing the divide from American equines to European
sport horses, Rick landed at Jane MacElree’s Hilltop Farm in Maryland where he joined the
management staff headed up by the Hassler family who have since moved on to form Hassler
Dressage at Riveredge in Chesapeake City, Maryland. Hilltop provided Rick a magnificent opportunity
to participate at the highest level of sport horse breeding in the United States. Rick specifically worked
as a manager of Hilltop’s impressive Stallion stable working with the stallions both in their animal
husbandry and their breeding progam.
Additionally, Rick trained with both Jill & Scott Hassler refining his sportsmanship in dressage, as well
as jumping. But, while his management skills and athleticism were being honed, it was his love for
working with young horses that emerged as Rick’s most favored passion. After Rick left Hilltop he
determined a goal to set up a small one-on-one facility to shepherd promising young horses to
readiness for qualified riders.
Berry Hill Farm is the realization of that dream. And today, we are delighted that Santeria is in
residence at Berry Hill where she well most surly evolve from a promising juvenile to a mature horse
with all of the poise, skills, breeding and readiness to be a champion.

Ria has arrived at beautiful Berry Hill Farm! And Rick
assures me that she has settled in well and is behaving
herself.
Read about Rick and his plans below. He is certainly
smack dab in the process of leading an extremely
interesting and unusual life.
