At StarQuarry Farm we breed only one or two foals each year, sired by the finest
stallions carefully chosen from the
very best German bloodlines.  Our mares are all SPS
or Elite mares, each evaluated by Hanoverian judges and found to be of exceptional
quality and talent, their scores ranking them in the top 1% of Hanoverian mares in the
good ol' US of A..
Great Mares!
updated March 1, 2010
In every way, we work to give our foals and young horses the very best start in life and
under saddle.  I love to brag, but actually I've only added a generation or so to
many
generations of great breeding.

THAT is what Great Mares can do!

It is IMPOSSIBLE to overstate the role of the motherline in modern sport horse
breeding.  Our sweet broodmares, SPS Withney (Wolkenstein II x Aalborg) and SPS Rose
(Rotspon x World Cup I) bring such incredible strength to our breeding equation..
Life is
SOOOOO  very short ~ let them help!

Farm News:
So, days on a breeding farm are routine most of the time.  But it has occurred to me that
those of you who are considering buying one of my sweet horses might like to read about
their lives both when they live with me, and also after they have gone on to their new homes.
This page and those that follow are my blog about life with my horses.
Above, SPS Rose and Faro SQF take a high speed tour of the pasture.
Below, SPS Withney demonstrates what 'uphill' means.
Not too darn bad for a broodmare with a 3 month old foal at her side!

Habinero SQF (2008 Hanoverian colt by Hotline out of EM Ramina by Regazonni) left today for
his new home with Chris and Diane Sweeney.  Chris and Diane are very experienced horse people
and are happy to have Habs exactly as he is.  His immediate job: be a horse, hang around and grow
up.  His long term job:  trail ride and have sex for a living.  NOT bad work, if you can get it!  Read
about my sweet HABS

Today is an exciting day at here at the farm.  Fahrenheit SQF, my 2008 Hanoverian colt (by Fidertanz
out of SPS Withney) is S-O-L-D.  It is always fun to sell a horse, but this sale is particularly exciting
because he now belongs to a wonderful trainer, Allison Dechant (
Dechantdressage.com ).  Fahrenheit is
one of the best I have ever bred.  I am so happy that he will receive correct, classic training, and I am
SOOOOOOOOOOO excited that he will have an opportunity to fulfill his potential!

Since Fahrenheit is currently a fuzzy little yak with a pot belly (totally in the throes of a dorky stage of
development), I decided not to put up a current photo of him.  Instead, see what Allison can do!  Below
is a photo of her riding her current competition horse, Regulus 24.  She trained this horse from the ground
up.  Not too shabby, huh?
I met Allison just over a year ago when she and her student Kacy flew from Denver to my farm to meet
my gelding, Con Bravo (2004 gelding by Contendro I and ~ like Fahrenheit ~ out of my mare SPS
Withney).  Kacy did buy Bravo, and Allison still trains him, so some day Fahrenheit and his big brother
will be barn mates.  But the VERY BEST news:  Fahrenheit is going stay here to grow up on my farm.
This is totally like having my cake and eating it too!

Below, recent photos of Allison and Fahrenheit's big brother, Con Bravo SQF.

Based on these photos (and seeing Allison ride), I think wonderful things are in Fahrenheit's future!
WOO-HOO!

Santeria SQF, our 2007 filly by Sandro Hit, has found a new home.  She has moved to Berry
Hill Farm on Long Island to live with
Rick!  See below, photos of Ria and Rick.

Rick flew down to Florida to meet Ria last month.  He and Rachel and I had a lovely, fun
afternoon with the horses.  We got Ria out to show off in the ring - and she did all three gaits
with
STYLE.  Then we got out the other young horses and the broodmares, and ran them all
around (well, one at a time) and admired their movement and laughed at the silly things they did.

So then Rick said he wanted to see how Ria went in hand.  I pictured him taking her for little jog
around the ring.  But NO, Rick and Ria absolutely
took off - Rick running and Ria right beside
him in a lovely extended trot.
So after watching about 2 seconds, I said to Rick: "You have done
this before!!"  Well, DUH!!  Rick worked at Hilltop Farm, trained
with Scott Hassler, and showed Hilltop and their clients' horses in
hand.  That is just about as good as it gets.  It was amazing watching
Ria because she obviously thought the same thing I did:  "
OMG!
This guy
really knows what he is doing!  I'd better pay attention!"

Then Rick asked me to run Ria so he could watch her go.

OOOOHHH, NOOOOOO  WAY!!!!!!

But Rachel said she would try.  Rach did have a little handicap in that
her jeans were kind of falling down.  It was very funny.  Instead of
focusing and moving out as she did for Rick, Ria was basically
sight-seeing and tagging along.  Sorry, Rach, but that is the truth.

I am very excited that Ria is living at Berry Hill with Rick.  I am
pleased and proud that such an accomplished and knowledgeable
horseman has one of my babies.  I think we will see wonderful things
from Rick and Ria in the future!
Rachel is ENGAGED!

WHO insists on getting her engagement photos
taken on the farm with her fiance, her two dogs
and her horse?

RACHEL DeDOBBELEER!  That's who!!

In the photo, from left to right, Toulouse, Rach,
Erik, Emma and Buddy.

I liked Erik's comment best.  He told us that he
used to go home after work, fix a drink, have a
nice dinner and relax.  But NOW no such luck.
He has to walk dogs, and come back up to the
barn to wrap legs or administer eye medication or
check for colic or see who has stuck their foot
through a fence or prepare for the horse show or,
or, or .......

This is truly a great match.  We are all SO excited
and happy for Erik and Rach!
Erik gave Rachel a GORGEOUS diamond engagement ring.  I've only seen it once since she won't wear it to the barn.  She says she
gets home in the evening, takes a shower, puts on her ring, eats, and goes to bed.  Then she gets up in the morning, takes the ring off
and heads out for the day at the farm.

Right now, Rachel is trying to decide how to break the news to the priest that she wants to have her dogs in the wedding.  I'm just
surprised she doesn't plan to ride her horse down the aisle!  The wedding will be next spring.

Click HERE to read about Rick Jankura, his farm, his absolutely amazing house, and his plans to specialize in the correct
development of young horses.  I mean it.
READ what he is up to.  You will enjoy it!  I am so happy to have Rick as a
new friend!
Guess what!  WE ARE PREGNANT!!!!  TWICE!!!!!!  SPS Rose (Rotspon / World Cup I ) is in foal
to the sensational Belissimo M (Beltain / Romadour II / Luxius xx).  YAHOO!!!!!!  Rachel and I met
Belissimo M last fall at the "GALA EVENING" in Verden, Germany.  He was featured along with 7 or
8 of his offspring under saddle.  I don't have any photos, because I spent the whole time he was in the
ring with my jaw practically on the floor and feeling dizzy, he was so amazing.  AND, cross fingers,
in under a year, I will have his baby right in the pasture right outside my window!

AND, SPS Withney (Wolkenstein II / Aalborg) is in foal to Fidertanz for a full brother/sister to her
2008 model: Fahrenheit SQF.  Take a look at
Fahrenheit's movement on his videos page.  It will be
completely self explanatory why I repeated THIS cross.  That boy can MOVE!

So, now we just have to keep our fingers crossed, eat grass, grain and alfalfa, and gestate until next
spring.  Actually, Withney is much happier when she is pregnant.  When she is in heat, she is such a
GIRLY-GIRL.  All kinds of drama and squeeling and such. Now we have many relaxing days dozing
in the stalls, and peaceful nights grazing on all that lush Florida grass.  PERFECT!!!

Balanchine SQF (Bugatti Hilltop x SPS Rose) has gone to work (work in Hawaii??
WHAT???).  Here is a photo of him with Mary on one of his first rides under saddle.  Mary
reports that he was calm and easy to start, but in this picture I think he is saying "HEY,
MOM!  There is something weird in my MOUTH!"

January, 2010 UPDATE

By the way, Mary reports that in the photo below Balanchine is NOT worrying about the
bit in his mouth.  His true thoughts:  "HEY!  Look at that
cute mare next door!"
From Hemoor, we drove west to Dormun on the North Sea to see
another of the finest family owned and run stallion stations:

Hengststation Meyer.  We were welcomed by Susanne Meyer, given a
lovely tour of the farm and were introduced to the fabulous stallions
owned by the Meyer family and the Leatherdales.

Below left, the breathtaking young stallion Damsey (Dressage Royal /
Ritual / Grande).

Below center, the beautiful memorial to His Highness, and at left, His
Highness himself.
Oops, I accidentally did it again (for the third year in a row).   Rachel and I went to Verden, Germany for the
October Elite Auction. Please let me warn you:  this trip is much more addictive than crack cocaine (is crack cocaine
addictive?  How would I know??).  It was total horse immersion for a week.  More than total.  HEAVEN!  This
year, we test rode some of the auction horses (well, that would be Rachel, not me), and thoroughly enjoyed all the
events and parties and hub-bub associated with these pre-auction events..

We decided to take a day and drive north to meet some of the prospective stallions for our 2011 foals.  We visited
two of the most famous Hanoverian Stallion stations in Germany.  Yes, very tough work, but I took it like a man.
These stallions are definitely on the (very) short list as Papas for out 2011 foals.
Our first stop was in Hemoor at Hengststation Pape where Susan Pape and Ingo Pape welcomed us.  We watched
Susan and students work stallions, toured the farm and also got to meet the spectacular retired old gentleman shown
below left with Susan: Davignon (Donnerhall / Pik Bube I / Diolen).  I can happily report that Davignon is content,
healthy, enjoying retirement, and still thinks he owns the farm.
We also had an opportunity to
admire the Pape's wonderful Sandro
Hit / DeNiro / Weltmeyer son:
Scolari (shown at right).

Finally, we were particularly
impressed with the young stallion
Fabregas (Florencio / DeNiro /
Lantham), shown at left
.  We
watched Susan ride him, but
somehow I just enjoyed and forgot
to take photos.

Here are the proud Papas to be:

SPS Rose is in foal to the sensational Belissimo M (below left) and SPS Withney is in foal to Fidertanz. (below right) CAN'T
WAIT for these two little ones!!

Santeria SQF
(Sandro Hit out of SPS Withney by Wolkenstein II) sent photos of her new life on Rick's farm.  She is
definitely not in Florida any more!  Plus, as you see below, she had her own Christmas Card!  Read Rick's report below ~
she started work before the winter snows set in on Long Island.
from Rick:

Hi Jill,

I apologize for not writing to you more often, but time just has a way of getting the best of me.  Nevertheless, it’s the holidays and
there’s a pen in my hand - so here I am (well actually it’s finger on my keyboard but that doesn’t have as nice a ring to it…).

Before the weather got too ominous, I spent a few days taking Ria to the next step.  You should know that with each new
progression, there is simply no trials or tribulations to report.  It’s all just so natural that I sometimes forget I’m teaching her.  She
lunges perfect circles and gladly shifts gears by voice commands.   Ask her to trot - she tots, ask her to wowh - she downshifts to a
walks, halt and she stops, call out a hu-yup and cantor she goes.  No whips, not screams, no bucks, no incidents. She’s simply a
dream, and here trot, my-my her trot has everything a dressage rider could wish for; and Oh boy , that hind end of hers!!WOWW!

So, progressing to a bridal, then saddle, was without incident.  Even throwing that Christmas wreath over her head for the card photo
was uneventful; although she did try to eat it.  So, before the temperature dropped to blanket status, I had my helper take the lunge-
line and I reached over the saddle for some backing .  She turned her head to be sure I wasn’t crazy, then took to her walk as usual.
It wasn’t long before I couldn’t resist and slid myself over the saddle and gently placed my feet into the stirrups.

Each day after that was another day of significant progress.  By the second day, the lunge-line was gone; she was listening to my
legs, and minding the reigns like a pro.  Needless to say, I am thrilled, to have done all this before the winter weather set in.

Have a wonderful holiday and know that your baby is in good hands.  We love each other. Ria is such a special horse!

All the best in the New Year !!! Rick

Balanchine SQF (
2006 gelding by Bugatti Hilltop x SPS Rose by Rotspon) wrote home!  He thought he was moving from
Florida to Hawaii for a perpetual vacation, but Mary has other ideas..............

from Mary:

Hi Jill,
We will get serious this spring!  but have had such a great time enjoying Mr B's early years!
We were on our way home after a short outing in the fields below our place when to our surprise, Randy just happened to be
coming home up the road with his camera!!  I LOVE this horse!!  Thought you would enjoy   :)   He gets so big when he sees
something, but is always such a gentleman.
Aloha, Mary
PS  He is wonderfully light in the hand and to the leg, esp for such a big guy.
Isn't he GORGEOUS?!!!!!!

Yes, OF COURSE I am prejudiced.

SO WHAT?
FEBRUARY 7th, 2010

A stressful day at StarQuarry that turned out to be absolutely wonderful!!!!  Allison Dechant  and her mom were in Florida to enjoy
the goings on in Wellington.  They used this opportunity to also come to our farm before they flew back to Denver.  Allison had
been here before when she and her student, Kacy, visited and bought
Con Bravo SQF (2004 gelding by Contendro x SPS Withney
by Wolkenstein II).  She says about Bravo:
"He's solid 3rd level, working on his pirouettes and some half steps! And boy can he
move! If that brain comes from Whitney I'll buy them all - WOW!"

Allison bought Fahrenheit SQF (Fidertanz x SPS Withney by Wolkenstein II) sight unseen about a year ago based on her
experiences with Bravo and Fahrenheit's
foal inspection video.  So since Fahrenheit has been mostly growing up and hanging
around for the last year, we were nervous about Allison coming to meet her horse for the first time.  They arrived and we turned
Fahrenheit out in the pasture to trot around and
HOLY COW!!!!!!  Has he got that movement or WHAT?!!!!!  Allison's passing
comment "
Boy, that hind end just keeps on coming, doesn't it".  I was SOOOO happy that he showed himself well, that silly little
boy uhhhh, silly big boy.

The only bad news: Allison is thinking about bringing Fahrenheit home to Denver in a month or two (OH, NO!!!) so she can get to
know him and think about pursuing stallion licensing for him.  As it turned out, Allison and her mom are absolutely delightful
people, and it was such fun to see them.  In my crystal ball, I see many trips to Denver in my future!
